The Expert for Lake Iseo

Tavernola

At the west shore of Lake Iseo you can find Tavernola. It has a population of approx. 2’300 people and is often called Tavernola Bergamasca. From Tavernola you have a beautiful view of the island Monte Isola. The main part of the “commune” is located at the shore of the lake and the other part, called Cambianica, is located higher up on a terrace right beside Monte Saresano. From there you have a fantastic view of the whole area. The patron saint’s festival of Tavernola is celebrated every year on July 2nd.

In the center of Tavernola you can find the church Santa Maria Magdalena. It was built from 1749 until 1761, but the consecration of the church was only in 1875. It is a baroque church, with an inside of simple elegance and an altar made of polychromatic marble.

Another very interesting church built in the 13th century is the church San Pietro and is located at the higher part of the commune close to the cemetery. It is a simple brick construction with a saddleback roof and a belfry with a square design. The inner walls of the church are decorated with frescoes made in the 15th and 16th century and above the choir you can see the mysterious image ‘three heads’ from Romanino. It is not clear if the image is part of a larger composition or if it was just the trigger for a new idea of the painter.

The smallest and oldest church of Tavernola which was built in the 11th century is San Michele. You can find this Romanic church by driving approx. 1km towards Vigolo.
